Hello Friends,

We're a little behind getting this e-mail out so it's been changed from our holiday mailer to our end of the year wrap up up. We've just about made it through another year!
This past week was eventful at On the Rise. The kids on our street spent days making elaborate snow forts and were ducked down and ready when R.J. (our Saturday grill cook) went outside on his break and tried to take on the entire Esplanade gang of 6 to 12 year olds in a massive snow fight. We also saw a lot of folks stopping on their way to or from the ski slopes and hiking trails. Pick up hot bagels, croissants, breakfast, and fresh brewed AWAKE organic coffee starting at 6 AM everyday. On your way home from the slopes you can relax to some great local music while you enjoy a cold beer and a hot wood fired pizza.

Raechel's over painting of the Bakery. "The Night Bake Shift in Winter" We are lucky to have amazing, dedicated bakers who come in before the snow plows are even warmed up to make bagels, scones, sweet rolls and croissants.

Food Despite the blustery wind and thick snow we enjoyed a toasty brunch with a bunch of dedicated customers last Sunday. Veggie biscuits and gravy, The Hibernator, and potato latkes kept people warm while we all watched the snow fall on the park. Later in the day we had neighbors in on skis and snow shoes stopping in to warm up and get a snack. We enjoyed our holiday baking this week. Lots of cookies and special orders went out. Meringue mushrooms, yule logs, cakes and dinner rolls. December is a fun time for bakers. On New Years Eve our regular dinner menu will be abbreviated. There will be lots and lots of pizzas available by the slice, as well as salads, sweet treats and hot and cold drinks.

Art: There's a lot of art news to share. The December series of art workshops wrapped up "super sweetly" with a two-day gingerbread workshop. Seventeen participants rolled out dough, traced pattern pieces, cut, baked, piped, put together and decorated unique houses. It was great to see grandparents, parents, children and friends all working so happily. We have decided to begin the next series of afternoon art sessions in February to give everyone ample time to plan.

Brunch at On The Rise 8-2 on Sunday Mornings

In February on Mondays, Judy and Raechel will lead three weeks of clay classes and on Tuesdays, Chris will lead three weeks of fiber arts classes. Look for a new sign up brochure around the first of the year. Speaking of the new year, New Year's Eve will be the soft opening of our latest art show on the walls in the dining room. It will be a community created group show completed by you!! Here's how it works: We will hang large, framed panels each dedicated to a theme (Gardens, Community Gathering, Children's Chalk Art, Entirely Sharpie Art, and New Year's Hopes). Then, anyone who wants to contribute can bring a photo of their garden, or create a small piece of art that fits the theme and medium of the panel. We'll get it started, you'll fill it up, and the show will hang in all it's glory (both in process and finished) through February. You can e-mail us photos/art or drop hard copies off at the bakery!

Music: After being closed Wednesday and Thursday nights. music returns tonight with an open Open Mic. Steve is going to be on hand to make a multi track recording of the evening. This is a great chance for you musicians to get a good live recording of your act. Saturday will bring a much anticipated show featuring Skanky Green. This group features many local talents in a raucous ensemble playing original ska, reggae, and jam tunes. The last show of the year is our New Years Bash featuring Andric Severance and his latin Jazz Quintet. Andric has been at OTR a couple of times with his quintet and a few more playing keys for The Pulse Prophets. The quintet will play from 9 till midnight. You could open for them because we are running another mic early in the evening from 6:30 to 8:30. !Funkwagon! "...a rich mix of soulful vocals and funky muthaf@cking bass blended with hypnotic grooves and a rock edge..."

Community: This month and next we will be finishing some unresolved details and continuing to make improvements to the dining room. If you have ideas or are willing to trade a couple hours of labor for pizza on a work night let us know. Craft Night on Tuesday 1/12 will focus on sharpie line drawings and kick of the Jan-Feb Community art show. Of course you can bring your own craft you've started at home and just share the company of fellow crafters. Craft nights are mellow, social, inspiring, and productive. We want you to feel welcome and share what you do. Come, grab a cup a tea and a goodie and take a look at what folks in the community have been creating.

see you soon,
Ben & Rae
