Hello Friends,

Happy 2009 everyone! Thanks to all who came out on New Years Eve to celebrate On the Rise style. Despite the bitter cold the music and the ovens kept us warm and the ball drop was spectacular. To commemorate the event we made a limited number of handmade silk screened T-shirts. Perhaps the first in a series of OTR Event Shirts. You can check out the design below and there are still a few available for purchase on the shelves. As always with music and arts programming, the money goes right back into more arts at OTR. We’ve got several things in the works that will make the January and February doldrums fly by so stay informed and get involved!

On the Rise T-shirt Factory

Food: One of the most recent editions to our already stellar soup line up is the Veggie Chili with seitan! Pete (our Wed.- Sat. lunch cook) has mastered the sourdough bread bowl. For a hearty lunch try some veggie chili with seitan topped with melted cheddar cheese. Another Pete creation was the hot tempeh special sandwich- think “Philly Cheese. Filling large special orders of On The Rise bagels has been keeping Judy and Steve busy in the early morning (maybe late night to you) hours. Looking at so many bagels rising and baking is pretty cool.

Art: While we’ve postponed the afternoon clay workshops until February, there is still plenty of art going on at OTR and many ways to get involved. This coming Monday, 1/12 is our next Craft Night and it promises to be a good one. As always you can come and bring whatever you a working on and just enjoy the company of other crafters. But if you choose, you can also come to do some dynamic doodling for with the simple materials of a sharpie marker and an index card. Resident Sharpie Artist (and Counter Person) Peg will inspire us with her groovy lines and lettering. All the cards will be assembled in a frame of sorts and hung in the dining room. If Sharpies aren’t your thing you might want to come with a garden photo in hand or create a drawing or painting of a garden to be part of our “Living Green” collage. The ultimate vision is that the walls of the dining room with be graced with a community created art show for the months of January and February so it’s up to you to join in and make it happen. Besides “Sharpie Art” and “Gardens” we will have two other panels: a Chalkboard Surface, and a Collage on the theme of “Community Gathering”.
