Thursday October 29 The PortersIn October of 2007, Jordan Romm and cellist Todd Porter began playing around with arranging a few songs that Jordan had been working on for the past year. Things evolved into a new project that incorporated a strong indie-folk influence with classical and rock underpinnings. Todd's cello brought a fresh new sound to the songs Jordan had been writing and his creative arrangements energized the music. After a few months of rehearsing, they both agreed that something was missing from the ensemble. They started searching for a female vocalist/violinist and last spring joined up with Rachel Smith, who was moving back to Vermont from Denver. The group plays all original songs and arrangements and is looking forward to getting things rolling this fall and winter.

Farm & Garden Happy Hour

from SJ: "Next time (Jan. 25) we thought it would be fun to bring our seed catalogs and work on our seed orders.  If there is enough interest, we can do a group order from Fedco.  They give really good discounts if you order enough and will pack each individual order separately and then group them.  You have to order potatoes separately from seeds, but otherwise it's pretty straightforward.  It would be good to actually place the order early, especially with potatoes, so we would want to pull it together directly after Jan. 25.  If you don't have a catalog they have one online at http://www.fedcoseeds.com/  And you can bring your laptop to the bakery because they have wifi!"

Wednesday August 18 Steve Hartman:
started at age 12, taking classical piano lessons. After picking up a hand-me-down guitar from his mother at age 15, quite contented with just playing for a few friends and having music just be an emotional hobby for him, Steve finally gave in to all the requests of finding a “real” show. Since then, it’s been a passion bordering on addiction. Sharing the stage with the likes of Jeffery Gaines and Dispatch, playing venues such as The House of Blues (Boston), The Elbow Room, (NYC), The Tin Angel (Philadelphia), Passim (Boston), and Higher Ground (Burlington, VT) Steve has played every sized room there is… and captured them all. Remembered everywhere he plays as the man with that ethereal voice and alluringly familiar songs, Steve continues to feed his addiction with a new born passion after taking a break from the road to pursue other ventures. Stage Performance Professor Livingston Taylor recalls Steve as, “Simply a joy to watch. He has a commanding stage presence and is one of the best I’ve seen come through here” (Berklee College of Music

Saturday October 16 Joe Fiedler !Special Show!

Trombonist/composer Joe Fiedler is known to critics as "among the most impressive trombonists to emerge in the past couple of decades" (Harvey Pekar, Signal to Noise) and "an MVP in configurations that range from salsa bands to the jazz avant-garde" (Time Out New York). Based in New York since 1993, he has performed and recorded in a long and eclectic list of musical settings ranging from pop (Firewater, Wycleff Jean, Jennifer Lopez) to Afro-Caribbean (Celia Cruz, Ralph Irizarry, Eddie Palmieri) to jazz (Andrew Hill, Lee Konitz, Maria Schneider) to the avant-garde (Borah Bergman, Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor). In addition to work as a solo trombonist and leader of the groups the Joe Fiedler Trio and Big Sack, Fiedler is an active member of such ensembles as Fast and Bulbous, Chris Jonas' The Sun Spits Cherries, and the big bands of Satoko Fujii, Ed Palermo and Charles Tolliver among others. His diverse discography features more than 70 recordings, including three as a leader. The latest is his 2007 trio release, The Crab (Clean Feed), featuring bassist John Hebert and drummer Michael Sarin. "When you listen to the music on The Crab," writes AllAboutJazz-New York's Editorial Director Andrey Henkin in the liner notes, "you know you're hearing the work of a major innovator. And few players on any instrument write tunes with as much breadth and diversity, using mutes, multiphonics, bravado on burners, avant musings, subversive marches and poignant ballads." Critics called the band's first CD, Plays The Music of Albert Mangelsdorff (Clean Feed), "triumphant" (Jay Collins, One Final Note), "involving" (Nate Chinen, New York Times), "a memorable and brilliant tribute" (Scott Yanow, All Music Guide) and "a survey that is at once deep and uncompromising and still decidedly accessible throughout, traits emblematic of the dedicatory maestro himself" (Derek Taylor, Bagatellen).

MothUp at On the Rise.

Twelve people shared their marvelous stories at our first gathering in November - most of them having walked in the door not intending to tell a story at all!
Once you see how easy it is, you just can't help yourself!

If you want to prepare ahead of time, here are a few tips for good storytelling:

  • Choose a story that has some action to be resolved, a surprise, a lesson learned, etc…
  • Make an outline.
  • Have a solid opening line and a clear ending.
  • The time goes fast - so leave out details that don't directly follow your story line.
  • Practice your telling – to your family out loud or in the shower to your self…

Most of all, have fun with it!

Wednesday December 8 SPECIAL Session Bluegrass Celebrating 3 years of OTR Bluegrass Sessions

Come celebrate the On The Rise Bluegrass Session's 3 year anniversary with the first Bluegrass Band Scramble. It will be an open session, but will be run quite a bit differently than normal. Each band will have a bit of time to pick their tunes and be ready to jump up on the mic and entertain the rest of us for a few glorious minutes!

Come play, come listen, come hang out, come drink, come eat, just come on out! It should be a good old time!

(hosted by Matt & Kalev)

He has performed or produced shows at many venues throughout the state, including the Flynn Space (Burlington), the Tupelo Music Hall (White River Junction), and Higher Ground in South Burlington, where he won the grand prize in the 2011 Higher Ground Comedy Battle.
